Clinical Health Psychology & Psychotherapy

If you've studied Psychology or if you've been in therapy, this page may be old news - for others this introduction may be useful.

Clinical Psychology is the field of Psychology that deals with
  • Assessment and evaluation of mental, behavioral, and emotional health as well as
  • Psychotherapy (Psychological treatment).
  • The status "Clinical Psychologist" is reserved for Psychologists who have worked at least two years in a State licensed, multidisciplinary facility - usually a hospital.

Clinical Health Psychology, a sub-specialty of Clinical Psychology, is comprised of
  • Medical Psychology. (Illness, medical treatment, and hospitalization impact emotional status and quality of life.)
  • Human Sexuality. (Dating, relationships, sex therapy, sexual orientation issues, sexual diversity, and challenges of physical intimacy.)
  • Sport Psychology & Peak Performance. (Competition provokes stress and anxiety.)

Psychotherapy is a form of treatment offered by Psychologists.  It does not include prescribing medication.  Psychologists use various therapeutic interventions depending on the needs of a client and the therapeutic orientation of the Psychologist.  Dr. Sapire responds to the needs of clients using an eclectic blend of Humanistic, Existential, Cognitive, Behavioral, EMDR, and Psycho-Physiological interventions as needed.  Therapy may be short term (limited to one consultation or a few sessions), or long term, and may be pragmatic, solution-focused, philosophical, sexological, family oriented, or aimed to help clients answer deeper questions about themselves, loved ones, or outsiders.  Coping strategies are taught as needed.

In his practice as a Licensed Clinical Health Psychologist, Dr. Sapire
