Welcome!
Thank you for visiting dsphd.com, the website of Dennis Sapire, PhD - Clinical Health Psychologist.
Dr. Sapire is a Psychologist in Rancho Mirage, practicing under California License PSY18734. He consults with individuals and couples, and accepts new clients directly or through referral.
For those who are new to Psychotherapy, the process is not easy to describe. It varies depending on the personalities of therapist and client, as well as client's needs and goals. A number of different approaches can be adopted. Unlike most relationships with medical doctors, the Psychotherapy process can require both reflection and considerable effort on a client's part.
Psychotherapy has potential benefits and risks. The risks include potentially distressing feelings such as sadness, guilt, anxiety, anger, frustration, loneliness, and helplessness. Psychotherapy may require discussing uncomfortable or problematic aspects of your life. Some clients seek insights into their past; some may focus on medical concerns or managing anxiety, stress, pain, phobias, or insomnia; others may focus on finances, work-related concerns, family challenges, lawsuits, or relationships.
Psychotherapy has been shown to offer potential benefits which may include reducing distress, resolving specific problems, improving interpersonal relationships, health, and quality of life. A Psychotherapist can't ethically predict which goals might be achieved or the exact length of the process - this will depend on many factors.
Initial sessions will involve an evaluation of client's needs and an invitation to determine tentative therapeutic goals. In addition, it is recommended that clients use the first few sessions to evaluate the relationship. There is no pressure to stay in therapy longer than one wants. Some clients visit for one or two sessions, or from time to time - others have regular weekly visits (or more frequently if needed).
Dr. Sapire invites questions from new or prospective clients. Psychotherapy can involve a large commitment of time, money, and energy, so clients should take care to select a suitable therapist. This can be especially true for members of groups who would like their therapist to have a special understanding of their background or minority status, for example, LGBT, transgender, secular, cancer survivor, Jewish, feminist, etc. A therapist does not need to be from the same minority or other group as a client in order to be effective, but every client is entitled to be comfortable with their therapist. Dr. Sapire offers a warm and welcoming environment for a diverse client population, showing respect for differences in age, culture, medical status, social background, religion, ethnicity, and sexuality.
From the time he was certified in Clinical Sexology and trained as a Sex Educator, Dr. Sapire has offered treatment to patients facing challenges to their intimate lives as a result of cancer, surgery, or treatment side effects, and for the unique challenges facing sexual minorities. He has a particular interest in social, relational, and sexual recovery after medical challenges or age-related changes.
Dr. Sapire offers EMDR as an adjunct to Psychotherapy in the treatment of emotional trauma.
The following notice applies only to clients who do not plan to use insurance to cover the cost of their Psychotherapy.
